Julian Nagelsmann has been manager of the German national team ever since taking charge in the fall of 2023 following the dismissal of Hansi Flick. His contract with Die Mannschaft is set to run through 2028 as he preps to lead Germany back to the promise land in next summer’s World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
They finished on top of their World Cup qualifying group over the likes of Slovakia, Northern Ireland, and Luxembourg. Their overall record from their six qualifiers was five
wins, zero draws, and one loss, having scored sixteen goals and only conceded three. It was a perfect campaign results wise bar the shock 2-0 loss to Slovakia back in October and there has generally been renewed hope in the national team ever since Nagelsmann has been at the helm. For the World Cup, they’ve been drawn to group E along with Curaçao, Côte d’Ivoire and Ecuador — a group they should definitely get out of at the very least to progress to the knockout stages.
While there is a great deal of excitement for the German national team in the buildup to next summer’s tournament, there are contingency plans in place by the DFB. Per information from Get German Football News on X, there is a termination clause in Nagelsmann’s contract with the DFB that would see him released of his duties if Germany fail to progress out of their group and into the knockout stages. With the opponents now confirmed for the group stages, there is zero reason why the 2014 World Cup winners should not be able to get out of the group, but there was a similar vein of thought for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where they failed to make it out of group with Mexico, Sweden and South Korea.
Despite the existence of the termination clause, Nagelsmann does have every intention of seeing out his full contract with the national team and will have every bit of confidence that they can go far next summer. Bayern Munich were interested in potentially bringing him back as manager after the decision was made to part ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the 2023/24 season, but Nagelsmann’s mind had already been set on the national team. He’s got just under three years left on his contract and he plans on honoring it and there’s nothing to say that positive results next summer wouldn’t warrant the DFB to offer him an extension.
