With Roma presumably flush after ending their Champions League drought, the club has been linked to a bevy of exciting players. Sure, they can’t play amongst the Real Madrids and Manchester Citys of the world, but the Giallorossi’s return to Europe’s most prestigious competition should give them more financial leeway on the transfer market.
We’re seeing this new existence unfold in real time, to the point where €22 million-rated teenage sensation Kerim Alajbegović is viewed as a Plan B rather than
the be-all end-all of Roma’s transfer ambitions. While we’re not exactly experiencing cognitive dissonance here, seeing the Giallorossi flirting with forty or fifty-million-euro-rated players takes a minute to digest, especially when their top target brings unprecedented baggage to the table.
We made our stance on a potential signing of Mason Greenwood known late last month (hard pass), but Roma’s pursuit of the 24-year-old forward is gaining momentum. According to the Corriere dello Sport, the club is making progress towards Gasperini’s top target, offering Greenwood a €4 million net salary and reportedly opening negotiations with Marseille, lodging an opening bid in the €40 to €45 million range.
The CdS also reports that Greenwood’s former Marseille running mate and current Roma winger Robinio Vaz is giving him the soft sell on Roma, touting the benefits of playing under Gasperini and living in the capital. Along with reports that Greenwood has sold his house in Marseille and that his other most ardent pursuer, Fenerbahçe, has dropped out of the race, this rumor is gaining momentum.
Needless to say, we’ll keep tabs on what could be the most expensive and controversial signing in club history.
