UFC Rio went down last Saturday night (Oct. 11, 2025) inside Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil leaving several fighters feeling the post-fight blues. Among them was Montel Jackson, who came up just short against Deiveson Figueiredo, losing a split-decision after a back-and-forth brawl.
And Thomas Petersen, who was knocked out by Vitor Petrino in the third and final round of their Heavyweight fight (see it again here). But which fighter is suffering from the worst post-fight hangover, now a few
days removed from the show?
Mateusz Gamrot.
“Gamer” was given a huge opportunity to step in and face former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira, who was originally set to face off against Rafael Fiziev before the sensational striker had to bow out of the fight with an injury. Ranked No. 8 coming into the fight, Gamrot had a one-way ticket to a Top 5 ranking if he managed to get a win.
From the jump, Oliveira put the pressure on as usual, walking down his foe in order to impose his will and prove a point. Given his length, it was obvious “Do Bronxs” had the advantage when it came to going blow-for-blow. That’s why Gamrot was quick to take down the former 155-pound champion in the opening frame. In round two, scrambles were the name of the game, but this time Oliveira found his opening and was able to get his back and sink in the rear-naked choke (video highlights here).
And just like that, Oliveira was back in business and reminded everyone that he is still a threat to once again claim the 155-pound crown.
As for Gamrot — who suffered the first stoppage loss of his career — while he did the company a solid by agreeing to step in to fill the void on short notice, he is now 1-2 in his last three outings. That said, I don’t expect the defeat to put him out of the Top 10, which means he won’t lose too much ground.
“So Mateusz trained hard for about 12 days and jumped on a plane to Brazil and took his shot,” said Mike Brown — Gamrot’s head trainer — after the loss on Instagram. “It’s always a gamble every time you step in the cage and this time the gamble didn’t pay off. The fight didn’t go our way but Gamrot still maintains that same warrior spirit and his passion like no other. He is truly one of a kind,” he added.
As for what could realistically be next for “Gamer,” perhaps a fight against the loser of the upcoming showdown between Beneil Dariush and Benoit Saint Denis, who are set to throw down at UFC 322 on Nov. 15 in New York City is in order. Either matchup would be a fresh one for Gamrot, and would offer him a good opportunity get a nice victory over a Top 15 combatant.
