Speaking on El Larguero (Cadena SER), former Real Madrid player and analyst Alvaro Benito explained why Madrid continue to struggle to put matches away, regardless of the opponent.
Benito pointed to recurring
lapses after taking the lead. “I haven’t understood those moments of continuing to sit deep and be beaten, allowing them to cross and invite pressure,” he said. According to Alvaro Benito, the concern is that this pattern has become habitual.
The issue goes beyond individual matches: “This Real Madrid struggles in certain aspects of the game, beyond who the opponent is,” he noted, underlining that the same problems appear whether Madrid face elite sides or lower-division teams.
Despite the criticism, Benito believes the club’s current approach with Xabi Alonso remains logical, at least for now. “I think it’s the correct thing to keep trusting Xabi until the Saudi Super Cup,” he said. Still, he acknowledged growing separation between coach and squad. “Let’s see if he manages to impose his idea. I see it as difficult because I see him more and more distant.” Benito was clear that patience has limits. “If the results get worse, it will be inevitable.”
