After Tyler Shough firmly made his mark in New Orleans, taking control of the offense last season, news about Spencer Rattler’s future with the Saints has been uncertain, whether he would stay or move to another team.
Since the trade market opened, some rumors and speculations have emerged about where he could be traded for more picks in the upcoming draft.
Looking back at last season, before Shough made his debut against the Rams in early November, Rattler was benched with a 67.7% completion rate
and finished the season with 1,586 yards, eight touchdowns, and five interceptions, starting in eight games.
From the beginning of his career, he was dealt a bad hand when he was the backup behind Derrick Carr during the short-lived Dennis Allen era in New Orleans.
From his rookie year, Rattler had many chances to prove himself on the field, especially last season, and it’s clear he has the talent to work his way into being a starter, but his skills need some sharpening.
He’s a great backup quarterback to have behind Shough, and the Saints could still have him for another year, but it’s a decision worth considering, as many other teams are looking for a young quarterback with his mobility.
Ideally, some sources lean towards the Saints trading him to the Rams is well decision, since Matthew Stafford’s tenure in Los Angeles might be coming to an end after next season.
Rattler would be able to start over Stafford if his injuries worsen and start the following year if they decide to part ways with Stafford or if he retires after next season.
When you look closely, Rattler would be able to learn a lot behind Stafford and would become an essential weapon for the Rams alongside Sean McVay, who has a great offensive mindset to develop a quarterback that could lead the Los Angeles future offense.
Most importantly, rumors suggest the Saints could receive a seventh-round pick in return, potentially using it on a developmental player while they save on some cap space.
Consider, would this trade be worthy if it were true to trade your backup quarterback for a seventh-round draft pick?
That said, it is true the Saints indeed want to create some roster flexibility; however, there is no urgency to get Rattler out the door.
With another year left on his contract, it could be more beneficial to hold on to him for better offers rather than settling for minimal value.
