What is the story about?
As
the season grinds on, there is going to be speculation about job openings at several ACC schools, including possibly UNC, Pitt, Syracuse, Boston College, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech.
For most of these programs, there will be a number of issue to work out, including being competitive financially. It’s just a reality of today’s game.
Given that, here are some names that could be tied to ACC coaching searches.
- TJ Otzenberger – He’s done a tremendous job at Iowa State. Would UNC be a tempting job? Hard to imagine it wouldn’t be.
- Danny Hurley – We’ve talked before about how UNC could court him by offering him annual shots at Duke. He’s got a lot of ties to Duke obviously, between brother Bobby and good friend Coach K, but there is a wound there somehow that he’s clearly itching to address. However, his wife, Andrea, is a Jersey girl and she had serious reservations about moving to L.A. if Danny had taken the Lakers job. Biscuits and gravy would probably appall her.
- Travis Steele – He was fired at Xavier and now with Miami of Ohio 21-0, the Travis Steele Rehab Tour is complete. Will he be ready to move? He could be a great fit at Pitt.
- Nate Oats – He’s been frequently mentioned as a possible UNC target if Hubert Davis is out. We don’t really care for his offensive philosophy, but different strokes for different folks. When you eliminate the mid-game, it’s just easier to prep for. Go for it.
- Josh Schertz – First at Indiana State and now at St. Louis, Schertz has done a great job. Part of that is due to the remarkable talent of Robbie Avila, but on the other hand, who identified and helped develop him? Schertz did. Great possible target for Syracuse.
- Mark Byington – He’s established himself as a truly superior coach, first at George Mason and now at Vanderbilt. If we were hiring at UNC, we’d certainly have him on the list. He looks special. Maybe even extry special.
- Takayo Siddle – Somewhat under the radar, he’s done extremely well at UNC-Wilmington. Siddle struggled his first year during Covid, but overall? He’s 122-49 and at a CAA school, that’s superb.
- Luke Murray – if we’re at BC and getting rid of Earl Grant, options are limited. We’d absolutely roll the dice of Murray. Plus you might get his father, Billy, to do an occasional pre-game pep talk like he did in Stripes.
