A freak show fight took center stage as the main event of WWE AAA Triplemania 34 Night 1 on Friday night (Sep. 11, 2026) from Las Vegas, and it was glorious. Rey Mysterio battled the giant Omos. In the tale of the tape, the lucha libre legend was giving up nearly two feet in height and over 200 pounds in weight. In the end, Rey could not overcome the goliath.
The freak show vibe was strong for this bout. I got goosebumps looking at the size difference. There was also the unknown factor of how Omos
would perform. He’s been used sparingly enough that I didn’t know what to expect from him in the ring for a match of this magnitude.
To set the story, Dominik Mysterio will defend the AAA Mega Championship against El Grande Americano at Night 2 of Triplemania 34 on Sunday in Mexico City. Dirty Dom needs Omos ringside as an insurance policy, but the giant was suspended by AAA general manager Rey Mysterio. That’s where this bout comes into play. Omos’ AAA career was on the line. Lose, and he is gone forever. Win, and his suspension is lifted.
Rey played it cool early with quick footwork to mock the giant trying to snatch him. Rey played mind games stalling.
After a few leg kicks, Rey ran the ropes. That was a mistake. Omos delivered a back elbow to flatten the legend. The giant tenderized Rey like a slab of meat. Rey rallied to stick and move. The giant staggered into the ropes, and his arms got tied up. Rey peppered punches to the defenseless Omos until the referee called for a break. As Dorian Roldan tried to free Omos, Dirty Dom attacked his father. El Grande Americano zipped around the corner to ignite a donnybrook. EGA tackled Dom over the commentary table. In the chaos of a ref bump, Rey hit Omos in the head with a chair. The hero sprinted for a variety of 619s to the legs. Omos toppled down into position for a proper 619. Rey landed a flying splash. The fans held their breath hoping for victory. Omos kicked out at 2.
Omos regained control. As EGA hyped the crowd for support, Dominik unleashed chair shots to the ribs and throat of his rival. Rey ran into a big boot from Omos, then the giant closed with a huge chokeslam to win.
The violence wasn’t over. Omos added a barrage of elbow drops after the match. When medics strapped Rey onto a backboard, Omos returned to the ring for a chokeslam through the commentary table. Omos chokeslammed Rey while he was still strapped to the board. It was over-the-top villainy at its best.
That match was the definition of sports entertainment. Rey and Omos delivered an old school David versus Goliath showdown. That aspect was intriguing on its own. Add in the AAA storylines for extra juice. The backside of Omos’ initial control became a little tedious, then the action sparked with Rey’s rally. Rey had the crowd in the palm of his hand for the 619 and pinfall off the flying splash. Omos played his role well as a giant. Frankly, the result was the correct decision. There is room to build up Omos for someone to eventually take him down in front of a raucous audience. Omos has that type of mystique in AAA. The post-match chokeslam was the cherry on the sundae.
