Opportunities in the NFL rarely are clean and easy. Jalen Hurts needed Carson Wentz to get hurt to get his shot at being the Eagles’ franchise quarterback, and had to be terrific to seize ahold of that job. Tom Brady needed Drew Bledsoe to get hurt to find his way on to the field and kick off his legendary career. Tyler Allgeier seized a job and watched it fade when the Falcons drafted Bijan Robinson, only to land in Arizona with a clear shot at a starting job and see Arizona draft Jeremiyah Love.
Players like Geno Smith, Sam Darnold, and Baker Mayfield had to wander in the wilderness before they landed in the right spot and got a little bit of luck en route to a starting job. Sometimes the path clears itself and it’s all up to you, sometimes it’s open a crack and you need help forcing it open, and other times the door closes as quickly as it opens.
For Michael Penix Jr., the opportunity is crystal clear. It wasn’t when the Falcons drafted him, because he had no idea how long Kirk Cousins would be parked in the starting job in front of him. It certainly wasn’t when he tore his ACL last November and watched the front office and coaching staff that drafted him get canned this spring, or when the new regime added Tua Tagovailoa to compete with him. Yet right now, heading into Week 4 of a 2026 season that has been a real roller coaster, Penix is the unquestioned starter and has 14 weeks of runway to prove he’s the franchise quarterback for Kevin Stefanski, Ian Cunningham, and Matt Ryan. It’s an opportunity that’s as clear-cut as possible, and now it’s all up to Penix.
I started writing this piece before the Green Bay game, but that game made it clear the door is open. Unless Penix simply can’t convince this staff he’s the guy because of his injury history, he has a real chance of getting this team to pick up his fifth-year option and beginning to think of locking him up long term.
If he’s hurt or ineffective in the weeks ahead after that impressive deubt, that chance is gone and the Falcons will invest in a new 2027 starter, with Penix relegated to backup duty or trade bait. I truly believe he has a long leash before the team turns to Tua Tagovailoa, who was the starter to begin the year simply because Penix wasn’t ready—and then of course Tua also got hurt, opening this door early—and I truly believe that the increasingly uncertain crop of 2027 quarterbacks can only help him.
I’m also not suggesting this is the perfect opportunity. The Falcons got the ball out of Penix’s hand faster than any other quarterback this week in part to help him out in his debut, but also because this line has been a bit suspect in pass protection early. Tommy Rees still hasn’t found an effective way to use Kyle Pitts, and Atlanta’s still trying to figure out what they have beyond Drake London in the receiving corps. There are challenges here.
But this is a line Penix has played with an knows well outside of Jawaan Taylor and a talented group of weapons headlined by Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts. The cupboard is hardly bare here and we aren’t getting Zac Robinson keying in on Penix infrequently utilizing play action and hardly ever putting Penix under center; this is going to be an attack that gives Penix every chance to hit layups and tries to pry open deep targets for him to work with. If there’s a franchise quarterback here, Penix will have his chance to show it, even if this Falcons team isn’t ultimately a contender.
The road here was rocky and the team will have to do its part to ensure Penix is successful. But in a league where opportunity knocks with conditions, Penix is getting a fairly rare chance to simply step into this job and earn it over the long haul. It’s all up to him now, and my fervent hope is that he proves to be the guy.
