Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund played out a wild 2-2 Klassiker at the Allianz Arena on Saturday, but the result was about as frustrating as it gets for the Rekordmeister. Bayern Munich had the chances, controlled the game, and twice took the lead.
Somehow, it still couldn’t finish the job.
The scoring started in the 38th minute when Konrad Laimer pounced on a rebound after Michael Olise set him up for a dangerous opportunity. That came shortly after referee Tobias Stieler, following a VAR review,
controversially disallowed a Jobe Bellingham goal for Borussia Dortmund because Carney Chukwuemeka interfered with goalkeeper Jonas Urbig while in an offside position.
FC Bayern had an opportunity to double its advantage in the 56th minute when a Felix Nmecha handball resulted in a penalty. Unfortunately, Harry Kane sent his effort crashing against the crossbar. Dortmund immediately capitalized, with Serhou Guirassy equalizing in the 60th minute.
Dayot Upamecano restored Bayern’s lead six minutes later, converting a Kane assist following a Joshua Kimmich corner. Kane later hit the post, and Lennart Karl rattled the crossbar in stoppage time. Dortmund, however, had the final say, with substitute Fábio Silva scoring in the 89th minute to steal a point.
As if dropping two points wasn’t enough, Bayern also suffered three injury setbacks. Ismaël Saibari (ankle) and Serge Gnabry (thigh) both left in the first half, while Olise was forced off in the 84th minute.
The final statistics showed Bayern with 56% possession, 23 shots, and 4.18 xG compared to Dortmund’s 0.63. Six big chances created, four missed, and two points dropped.
Bayern Munich remains atop the Bundesliga on goal differential, but the injury situation is becoming a serious concern with Atlético Madrid looming in the Champions League. A frustrating afternoon, an exhausting Klassiker, and potentially three significant injury headaches.
Bayern Munich probably deserved better than this, but the game…is the game.
