Speaking to France Football (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) following his historic triumph, Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane admitted that the significance of the award has not fully sunk in yet. For a player who has spent years establishing himself among the best in world football, finally receiving the sport’s most prestigious individual honor is an experience unlike anything he has encountered before.
“I don’t think I’ve fully realized what’s happening to me yet. I’m still trying to take it all in.
To be honest, it’s very difficult to fully appreciate the significance of such an important award, especially when you’re still an active player. It’s by attending events like these, seeing Cristiano, Messi, and all the great legends of the past, that you begin to understand what it really means,” said Kane.
Kane also opened up about the emotions he experienced when Cristiano Ronaldo announced his name as the winner. Despite everything he has accomplished on the pitch, the moment brought an entirely different kind of pressure.
“I was nervous, really nervous. My heart was racing. It’s a very different kind of pressure from what you experience before a big match, when you know you can influence the outcome by playing well or scoring a goal. At the moment when Ronaldo was about to announce the winner, I felt as though he had dragged out the suspense for 20 minutes. When he said my name, all the emotions hit me at once: relief, happiness…I didn’t really know how to react. I was completely overwhelmed. I had never experienced anything like that before,” Kane remarked.
There is something particularly special about hearing Kane describe the experience this way. This is a player who has spent his career chasing trophies, breaking scoring records, and proving himself against the very best. Yet, when the biggest individual recognition in football finally arrived, even he was overwhelmed.
Harry Kane is the Ballon d’Or winner. And perhaps it will take a little longer for him to truly believe it.
