Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl was left frustrated after Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund, acknowledging that while his team produced a strong performance, their inability to convert chances ultimately cost them the victory.
Bayern responded well after falling behind, showing plenty of attacking intent throughout the second half. After conceding the equalizer, the home side quickly restored their advantage through Harry Kane, but they were unable to find the decisive third
goal that would have put Der Klassiker beyond Dortmund’s reach.
For Eberl, that was the biggest source of frustration. He felt Bayern created enough opportunities to secure all three points, particularly after getting back on top following the equalizer, and believes the players must accept some responsibility for the result.
“When you break things down quite simply, we didn’t manage to score a third goal after going 2-1 up, even though it was definitely possible. We had a lot of chances, especially after the equalizer. In my opinion, we played very well at the start of the second half. We conceded the equalizer but pretty quickly made it 2-1. The fact we haven’t won in the end, we need to put a bit down to ourselves because we didn’t take our chances,” Eberl said (as captured by FCBayern.com).
It is difficult to disagree with Eberl’s assessment. Bayern had opportunities to put the game away but allowed Dortmund to remain within touching distance.
The performance had plenty of positives, but against a direct title rival, Bayern will know that missed opportunities can be costly. This was two points dropped, and Eberl knows it.
