The Tigers were tantalizingly close to first place at the OU Intercollegiate, finishing just two strokes behind host Oklahoma.
Mizzou recorded its lowest score, a 9-under-par team total, during the third round Tuesday at the Wichita Country Club in Wichita, Kansas, to keep its second-place rank after the second round. This followed a 1-over team total for the first round and a 3-under for the second.
Senior Addie Dobson led the third round push, matching her career-low 18-hole score of 66 on the par
71 course. She shot even or under par on every hole during the final round, totaling five birdies.
Dobson matched her low 18-hole score just two weeks after she logged her first collegiate tournament victory and set a new 54-hole low at Mizzou’s Johnie Imes Invitational.
Individual performance
Mizzou competed in three rounds across two days in a field of 11 teams and 66 players.
Dobson led the Tigers in second place with a 6-under total, shooting 71-69-66. She was one stroke behind the first-place finisher from Oklahoma.
Dobson started by sinking three consecutive birdies on her last three holes in the first round and closed with a 4-under final round.
Senior Melanie Walker came in fifth with a 4-under total, shooting 72-68-69. She shot the team’s only eagle, on hole 4 during the first round.
Walker also shot well on the front nine holes – eight of her ten birdies across the last two rounds were on the front nine.
Senior Fleur van Beek shot 73-72-69 for a 1-over total to tie for 18th place.
Junior Alexandra Berglund tied for 22nd place, shooting 72-72-71 for a 2-over total.
Sophomore Addie Surber tied for 38th place with a 7-over total, shooting 70-75-75. Her first round was anchored by four birdies on the front nine holes.
Freshman Page Bowman, who competed as an individual, tied for 40th place. She shot 75-70-76 for an 8-over total.
Bowman’s second-round 70 marks a new career-low 18-hole score.
Continued eligibility uncertainty
Dobson and Walker are still competing with temporary eligibility granted by a temporary restraining order against the NCAA. The hearing that could have granted them permanent eligibility was pushed back from the original date of Sept. 28, and their temporary eligibility was extended as a result.
They’re both seeking a fifth year of eligibility under the NCAA’s five-year eligibility model, but unclear rules have made their eligibility uncertain. Following a lawsuit Dobson and Walker brought against the NCAA, a Boone County judge granted them a temporary restraining order, which requires the NCAA to allow them to compete until a final decision is made. The hearing that could grant them permanent eligibility is now scheduled for Oct. 8.
SEC threat: Oklahoma
For tournament host and fellow SEC competitor Oklahoma, this marks the third victory of its last four tournaments, tying its record for most wins in a season with over half the season to go.
Looking forward to the SEC Championship in April, the Sooners are proving to be a real threat.
The Tigers will compete next at the Illini Women’s Invitational, hosted by the University of Illinois at the Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois.
