The Packers’ season will probably not hinge on the strength of their running backs, which is a good thing, because I’m not sure anybody really knows what the Packers have at running back.
And that includes the Packers, who are currently without the services of Josh Jacobs (and likely will remain so for the foreseeable future). Beyond Jacobs, the backfield consists of MarShawn Lloyd, who has injured just about every body part known to man (and several previously unknown to science), Chris Brooks (more
of a fullback, to be honest), and Kaleb Johnson, a second-year third round pick so disappointing the team that drafted him traded him for just a sixth round pick.
They’ve also got Damon Bankston kicking around, but he’s merely an intriguing prospect at this point, and he’s barely been in town long enough to know where the bathrooms at Lambeau Field are. Maybe he could be a help at some point, but he’s got to get his feet wet first.
None of this should be a season-long threat. Josh Jacobs will return at some point, though the Packers might be better off without him. If Lloyd can stay healthy, he and Brooks should be able to put together a more-or-less competent backfield. And even if they can’t, the running game probably won’t be what holds back the Packers this year. As far as overall concerns, there are much bigger fish to fry.
