When Joshua Kimmich was subbed off in 81st minute of Bayern Munich’s 4-1 Bundesliga win over Borussia Mönchengladbach, the de facto captain (Manuel Neuer had already left the game with a calf injury at halftime) had a choice to make — who should get the armband?
Rather than give it to his more experienced midfield mate, Leon Goretzka, Kimmich opted to hand it over to Jamal Musiala.
The youngster seemed a bit confused, but took the armband, slapped it on, and appreciated the honor.
“I’m not sure why
Josh gave it to me. I thought it would be Leon because he’s older. But I’m happy. It’s a big honor to wear the armband at such a big club,” said Musiala (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Kimmich likely gave the captain’s armband to Musiala because of Goretzka’s impending exit from the club. While Musiala might not have been sure about that decision, it does not seem like such a bad idea after the fact (even if Goretzka had a stronger overall game).
