At the end of last month, our man on the WWE Speed beat M.G0mez brought it to everyone’s attention that the show had abruptly halted with no explanation.
Launched around WrestleMania last year, Speed was exclusive to the social media platform now known as X. It consisted of matches with 3-5 minute time limits featuring wrestlers from all three WWE brands, competing for the men’s and women’s Speed titles. At the time of its now-apparent end, Raw’s El Grande Americano and NXT’s Sol Ruca held those titles.
And according to WWE.com, they still do. But that doesn’t mean they have much more information than we do.
Ruca, who also holds NXT’s Women’s North American title, recently told Ten Count Media (h/t 4fwonline for transcription):
“I’m definitely still a double champion. I am, you know, the Speed Champion and the North American Champion. I know there’s a little confusion about what’s going on. I honestly don’t really have an answer either. But until they tell me I’m no longer a double champion, I am still a double champion.”
She mentioned the fact she appeared with the Speed belt on NXT before Speed seemingly went away while musing about the future of her title:
“Maybe we’ll start doing stuff on NXT with it. I mean, I was starting to wear it on NXT, which before wasn’t allowed because it was a separate — you know, technically a separate universe being on X. But I think there was a little bit of leeway, and now I think we’re just trying to figure out what we want to do with it.”
As long as she gets to call herself champ-champ, Sol’s not gonna ask too many questions:
”But, I mean, as of now, I’m still technically a double champion. So I’m not complaining.”
We’ll see if the champ’s interview prompts WWE to give us the official word on what’s going on with Speed.
