The Kentucky Wildcats have less than two weeks before they welcome the Toledo Rockets to Kroger Field to kick off their 2025 season.
There has been plenty of conversation surrounding the program this offseason as Mark Stoops and his staff welcome 50 new players to the roster. That has left the question; how good can this team be?
Overall this squad seems to have a wide range of how good they could be. However, it appears this team will be moving back to the one thing offensively that good UK programs
under Stoops have been known for… running the ball.
Kentucky welcomed two transfer running backs into the program this offseason in Seth McGowan and Dante Dowdell, while also retaining Jamarion Wilcox and Jason Patterson. With quite a bit of experience in the backfield this season it is Dowdell and McGowan that are expected to get the majority of the work.
Now here is where things get a little worrisome… Dowdell and McGowan have missed the last two scrimmages. We got a brief update on McGowan following a recent team scrimmage.
“Dante didn’t play today, so the other backs got a lot of work done. I feel better about our run game,” Stoops said. “I think when we put it all together, I’m looking forward to that. With everybody healthy and everybody in there.
“But in scrimmages like this, we don’t have that many opportunities where it’s completely live, so sometimes, you want to work on certain things.”
Sounds like both lead backs will be rolling into week one without a ton of reps in fall camp. Let’s hope that doesn’t come back to hurt the team in the first few weeks of the season.
