The first day of the Winter Meetings passed by without much happening.
The Tampa Bay Rays may have been the busiest team of the day as they reportedly reached an agreement with veteran LHP Steven Matz on a two year deal and also signed infielder Logan Davidson to a minor league deal.
Today figures to be somewhat eventful with Wander Franco’s appeal in the Dominican Republic set to take place and then the MLB Draft Lottery will be held later in the day at 5:30; the Rays have a 3.03% of obtaining the number
one overall pick in the 2026 draft.
We don’t know yet how the Rays will use Matz, but it’s possible that he may be the veteran pitcher the team was looking to add to the starting rotation. It’s also entirely possible that they are still on the hunt to add a starting pitcher. We also know the team is actively searching for players capable of playing shortstop as the team’s depth has been vastly depleted over the past few months.
On the rumor mill, a report has emerged that the Houston Astros are interested in Shane Baz and that the Rays are interested in Anderson Brito in the Astros system. Will that become anything more?
Maybe we’ll find out during day two of the 2025 Winter Meetings.
