Welcome to the Morning Commute
Today we’re talking about Mizzou Hoops
Mizzou Football is on their bye week. The next time the football Tigers are in action vs Texas A&M on November 8th — Mizzou Basketball will already have two games
under their belt. It’s hard to believe, but the college basketball season is here as Missouri opens on Monday at Howard.
Most projections have Mizzou as a likely NCAA Tournament team this season with key returns Mark Mitchell and Anthony Robinson II leading the way.
Both Mitchell and Robinson have appeared on national top 100 player lists in college basketball.
Per ESPN, Robinson comes in at 93rd, and Mitchell at 49th:
Robinson blossoming into one of the SEC’s better point guards last season was critical to the Tigers’ turnaround from zero conference wins to a 6-seed in the NCAA tournament. He averaged 9.0 points and 3.5 assists, shooting 40% from 3-point range on low volume. He was also at the heart of one of the most active defenses in the country, averaging 2.0 steals and jump-starting Missouri’s aggressiveness. — Borzello
Coach Dennis Gates found the perfect role for Mitchell last season, using him as a matchup nightmare in the frontcourt and even occasionally as a small-ball 5. He drew contact at an incredibly high clip, ranking in the top 25 nationally in free throw rate. He also averaged 20.0 points over an eight-game stretch in February and March, including a 31-point effort against Alabama. — Borzello
On CBS Sports: Mark Mitchell ranks 37th and Anthony Robinson 63rd:
The former Duke star found a new home last season with Missouri and thrived. Mitchell started all 33 games and averaged 13.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists. The Tigers were by far the most improved team in the SEC last season. Missouri went from a 0-18 record in conference play during the 2023-24 campaign and won 10 games in SEC play last season, en route to a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Mitchell is one of the best returning players in the SEC. — CS
Robinson was one of the most improved players from the SEC. After averaging just 3.9 points during the 2023-24 campaign, Robinson saw his role grow and started in 31 of 33 games for the Tigers. After averaging 9.0 points, 3.5 assists and 3.1 rebounds last season, he should be in line to take another leap. — CS
Mizzou was predicted to finish seventh in the SEC preseason poll. The Tigers check in at No. 28 on KenPom. It should be a fun year.

Freshman Matt Zollers looked great under center for Mizzou and if he’s able to keep it up as the season finishes, he’s got a serious shot at the starting spot next season. If the spot is belongs to Zollers, I’d expect Pribula to transfer. Super interesting to think about.
Despite the loss to Vanderbilt, Zollers played well — especially as a freshman on the road against a Top-10 team. Future looks bright for him.
Mizzou lost the game. Boo. 0/20
In conclusion, I hated having to watch this game again, but Ahmad Hardy’s run made it kind of worth it as it is 74 percent disrespectful to Vanderbilt and their fans.
Now I can forget this game ever happened. Sick.
It was a better performance from Ahmad Hardy — albeit in a loss.
For the Tigers, the path forward during this off-week must center on three primary goals. With Mizzou’s SEC championship aspirations all but quashed and their playoff hopes on thin ice, the Tigers still have an opportunity to make noise nationally. They have a lot of work to do this week to make that happen.
Nathan looks at what the Tigers have to do on their bye week to improve.
Mizzou’s record won’t be affected. It’s an exhibition contest: there’s a good chance this game will be lost in the annals of history, clouded by whatever the Tigers accomplish over the next few months.
Not the best start to the Kellie Harper era, BUT it’s only an exhibition.
With the Tigers facing a new course at Cherokee Farm, the team will have to adjust to unfamiliar terrain and multiple top-placed teams. This challenge will give them a chance to test their teamwork and endurance against some of the SEC’s best competitors.

My Results: Arkansas Razorbacks — 2nd in conference, 13-5
Mizzou travels to Fayetteville on February 21st. Arkansas comes to Columbia on March 7th.
Anyway, we were 4-2 on the week which pushes the overall record to 29-25, 14-13 on Best Bets.

With the season rapidly approaching, we ask you this on our latest SBN Reacts survey: Who will lead Mizzou Basketball in scoring?
I think it will be a close call between Mark Mitchell and Anthony Robinson II.
