A quick glance at the ACC standings and you probably wouldn’t believe your eyes. Five teams are undefeated in conference play; only three of those teams have played more than one conference game. Virginia (5-1, 3-0), Duke (4-2, 2-0) and Georgia Tech (5-0, 2-0) are currently the ACC’s top teams.
No. 2 Miami and SMU are also undefeated in league play, at 1-0. Virginia, obviously, is the biggest surprise. Georgia Tech, not so much. The Yellow Jackets entered the 2025 season with increased expectations,
and they haven’t disappointed. They should probably have one loss on their ledger, though, as ACC officials completely handed them a game against Wake Forest two weeks ago.
Now ranked No. 13, the Jackets host Virginia Tech (2-4, 1-1) this weekend in Atlanta. After starting 0-3 and firing head coach Brent Pry, the Hokies had won two in a row before making mistake after mistake in last week’s 30-23 loss to the aforementioned Wake Forest Demon Deacons. So, what felt like some real momentum against all odds, Virginia Tech feels like it’s back to playing out the season under interim coach Philip Montgomery as we await the hiring of a new coach.
Georgia Tech’s biggest win this season came against then-No. 12 Clemson. That victory doesn’t look as impressive as it once did. Still, the Yellow Jackets are legit. Head coach Brent Key has proven to be the right coach to turn GT around, and the Jackets also happen to have one of the better quarterbacks in college football.
Senior Haynes King leads Georgia Tech in rushing, in addition to completing 68.5% of his passes for 768 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound King has also rushed for 380 yards, averaging over five yards per attempt and scored seven touchdowns on the ground. Stopping King, the runner, should be Virginia Tech’s No. 1 priority, which will be easier said than done.
The Hokies’ offensive success relies on running backs Terion Stewart and Marcellous Hawkins. Stewart has been phenomenal; he just needs more opportunities to shine. Too often last week, the Hokies fell in love with throwing the football. That’s not the recipe for success with this team, despite having excellent receivers. Tech still struggles to protect quarterback Kyron Drones, and Drones still struggles with accuracy.
Something Montgomery should keep in mind is that Georgia Tech has the country’s 105th-ranked run defense, allowing over 166 rushing yards per game.
