There are very few players in Bayern Munich history who have accomplished what Manuel Neuer has.

Since arriving in Munich in 2011, Neuer has won everything there is to win. Multiple Bundesliga titles, multiple DFB-Pokals, two UEFA Champions League trophies, two FIFA Club World Cups, and countless individual honors have cemented his place as one of the greatest goalkeepers the game has ever seen. He also completely changed the position, redefining what it meant to be a modern goalkeeper with his sweeping

style and elite distribution.

That legacy is unquestioned.

At the same time, football is a sport that constantly looks forward, not backward. Following several injury-plagued seasons and a number of high-profile mistakes over the past year, a growing section of the Bayern Munich fanbase has begun wondering whether Neuer should have retired earlier or whether the club should have moved on sooner.

Others believe that criticism has gone too far. They point to everything Neuer has given the club over the last 15 years and argue that one of Bayern Munich’s greatest-ever players deserves more patience and respect, even if he is no longer performing at the extraordinary level that made him a legend.

It is a difficult conversation because both things can be true. Neuer’s place in Bayern Munich history is untouchable, but questions about his current level and the club’s future are also fair to ask.
