The Dallas Cowboys had Super Bowl aspirations entering the 2026 NFL season and that shouldn’t change despite their overall poor play to start the year, which has resulted in a 2-4 record through the first six weeks. This is a team that has the talent to turn things around and every reason to do so due to the unique situation they find themselves in.
First off, the Cowboys are still very much in the playoff race due to the poor state of the NFC East division. For the second week in a row, all four
teams in the NFC East failed to win, leaving the division up for grabs. Despite disappointing at every turn so for this year, Dallas is still somehow considered the favorite by many to be the division champs.
As long as their playoff hopes are still alive, we can fully expect Jerry Jones and Company to do everything within their power to turn things around. That means another big trade could be in play before the November 10 deadline as well as them sticking with and remaining patient with Brian Schottenheimer, despite his questionable coaching/decision-making.
As much as many of us would like to see Schottenheimer replaced after his many coaching gaffs, that seems highly unlikely given the state of the NFC East division and the possibility of the Cowboys coming out on top. After all, who would step in to replace him? Klayton Adams? He is supposedly an up-and-coming HC candidate, but even he’s an unproven one.
Another reason to keep rooting for the Cowboys to turn things around and finish strong has to do with draft positioning. They currently hold two first-round selections in the 2027 NFL Draft, but the higher of the two belongs to the New York Jets as part of the trade package for Quinnen Williams. As things stand right now that would be the sixth and 27th overall picks, the latter of which is from the Green Bay Packers for Micah Parsons.
How the Packers end the things is completely out of the Cowboys control. They could continue to string wins together, make the playoffs, or perhaps even the Super Bowl. That would put their first-round pick in the latter part of the round. What they can control is how they finish the season, preferably as a playoff team or even better as a Super Bowl champion.
That way the difference between the Cowboys and Packers first-round picks is minimal at best. No one wants to see the Cowboys part with a Top 10 selection as things currently stand. That would just be rubbing salt in an open, festering wound after suffering through in another disappointing season. That would be the ultimate gut punch.
While the Cowboys may be disappointing us at nearly every turn so for this year, there is still reason to root for them to turn things around and finish strong. All of the pieces, at least most of them, seem to be in place. It’s up to them to start executing and playing better. For the sake for mental health, all of us are probably hoping they can do so.
Where are you on the season? Have you packed it in already? Or are you rooting for the turnaround?
