Newcastle United’s midfield rebuild may not be finished with the arrival of Nico Gonzalez, as another young Spanish midfielder has emerged as a potential option during the final week of the transfer window.
The Magpies have already agreed a deal worth £48 million plus £4 million in add-ons for Gonzalez, but Matthias Jaissle might require further midfield depth, particularly with Joe Willock potentially joining Besiktas before the deadline.
According to Mundo Deportivo’s Jordi Batalla, Newcastle is
among the Premier League clubs interested in Barcelona midfielder Marc Casadó, whose departure from the Catalan club appears a fait accompli.
“Clubs linked with the move include Aston Villa, Newcastle, and Brighton,” Batalla reported. “It’s worth remembering that Casadó was left without a squad number at Barça, with the number ‘17’ assigned to Gordon, so his departure is only a matter of time.”
Casadó, 22, has spent the past several weeks training separately from Barcelona’s main group and is not part of manager Hansi Flick’s plans. According to Batalla, agent Jorge Mendes is consequently working to find the midfielder a new club.
Newcastle is far from alone in monitoring the situation. Nottingham Forest is considered the leading candidate to land the Spaniard, while Sunderland has subsequently entered the race and is reportedly negotiating a deal with Barcelona.
Casadó’s preference could at least help Premier League suitors, as Batalla reported that the Spain international wants to continue playing in Europe despite receiving financially attractive proposals from Saudi Arabia.
“The midfielder prefers to remain in European football, despite attractive offers he has received from Saudi Arabia,” Batalla reported.
Barcelona’s asking price should not necessarily represent a prohibitive obstacle either, although there is no indication yet that Newcastle has submitted an offer or opened negotiations.
“Casadó is valued at around 30-40 million euros,” Batalla reported, putting the potential cost at approximately £26 million to £34 million.
