Tim Settle returns to the franchise that drafted him in 2018. According to multiple reports, Settle has agreed to a 3-year contract valued between $23 million and $25.5 million, marking an important addition to Washington’s defensive front as the team looks to rebound from a disappointing 5–12 season and a bottom-of-the-NFL defensive ranking in 2025.
Settle, 28, was originally selected by Washington in the 5th round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Virginia Tech. During his first four seasons in D.C.,
he played a rotational role alongside a talented defensive line anchored by Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne, showing flashes of interior disruption and steady run defense. After leaving the Commanders, Settle spent two seasons with the Buffalo Bills and another two with the Houston Texans, where he evolved into a consistent starter. In 2025, he started 12 games for Houston, recording 15 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1 sack, and 3 passes defended, demonstrating versatility and reliability in both run-stopping and gap control roles.
With this signing, the Commanders are clearly aiming to bolster a defense that ranked at the bottom of the league last season. Settle’s familiarity with the organization and his experience as a productive interior presence make him a strong fit for new defensive schemes expected under Washington’s retooled coaching staff. His return, combined with the high-profile addition of edge rusher Odafe Oweh, signals an aggressive approach to strengthening the defensive front. For Settle, the deal represents both a homecoming and an opportunity to reestablish himself as a key veteran leader in Washington’s defensive rebuild.
Recently, Settle was in Ashburn to sign his new contract, and while he was there, took a few minutes to re-aquaint himself with the local sports media.
Settle started out by saying that the facility “felt like home” and echoed the comments of so many other Commanders players in the Dan Quinn era by saying that he felt welcome when he walked in, saying that it was “amazing” and that the “energy is unmatched”. He mentioned at one point that he is “all energy” and “you’ll hear me before you see me”, stressing his gregarious nature and the ease with which he adapts to new or changing situations.
I’m not sure if Tim was saying that he wanted to be ‘disruptive’ or ‘destructive’, but it doesn’t matter, I guess. He plans to be a force on the inside of the defensive line following his stints with the Bills and Texans — two good defenses.
Settle says that “things changed for the better” during his 4-year absence. Grinning broadly, he called it “a healed environment”.
Asked about new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones, Settle immediately mentioned his energy, and then compared Jones to a chess master. Sounds like Tim is sold on his new boss already!
He didn’t offer much insight about how he will fit into the defensive scheme, simply saying that he’s “interchangeable” and able to play nose tackle, 3-tech or lined up outside, saying, “I can do it all, but I’m coming in to control the middle of the field.”
Settle talked about his self-image, describing himself as ‘an entertainer’, saying that this would help pull together the 2026 defensive group that comprises players from so many different teams and backgrounds into a cohesive unit.
Asked why re-joining the Commanders now was the right move, Settle reminded everyone that he’s from Manassas Virginia, and that he grew up as a Washington fan. Tim actually said at one point that he’s a fan of the organization before he’s a player, and he loves the changes that have taken place in his absence. He said that, when he left at the end of his rookie contract, he didn’t like how he left, describing his return as a “new era; a new chapter”, adding that with the new front office and new coaching staff, this is the environment that he wants to be in.
Tim took a moment to list some of his teammates that he remembered from his first stint in Washington, with a “shout out to Tress Way”, and mentions of Jeremy Reaves, Scary Terry, and Daron Payne — all with a huge smile and obvious enthusiasm. He said he’s already re-connected with Payne and added that he looked forward to catching up with the others soon.
