It’s officially September and while we have to wait a few more days, cooler days are on the horizon. Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League as the only team in possession of a perfect record. Life is pretty good.
It is also the first international break, which means Liverpool fans are left without club football while also hoping their globetrotting Reds return without any injuries. It is, in short, a lull in the calendar that can make the reporting side of things a bit difficult. Thankfully,
though, we do have something to talk about: Liverpool’s new kits this season.
As fans know, this season marks the return of Adidas as Liverpool’s kit manufacturer. The period of time that has elapsed since these two iconic football brands were linked includes Warrior, New Balance, and Nike as sports brands that have been responsible for designing and distributing Liverpool’s kits. The track record for each of these brands was mixed to most fans, though I will note that I personally found the Nike era to be interesting in terms of the big design swings.
Which is actually what makes my initial feelings about this year’s kits so surprising – even allowing for the strength of kits released under Nike, this batch might be my favorite. All three – I’m counting the leaked images of the as-yet-unreleased third kit – are so well done. Which is why I thought it might be fun to drop a quick ranking of this season’s kits.
Here we go, in descending order.
3. Home: This might be my favorite home kit in some time, but being that red isn’t among my most favorite colors, I tended to rank the home kits a little lower than the others every year. Still, don’t let what feels like faint praise take away from the iconic image of Liverpool players wearing the three stripes of Adidas. Thinking back to Fernando Torres – the main reason I’d become a Liverpool fan in the first place – the partnership with Adidas is, in my opinion quite irresistable.
2. Away: There is something about this colorway that is absolutely right in my wheelhouse. I mean, among my favorite Liverpool kits is the infamous fractal kit from the 13/14 season. Also sporting a white, red, and black color combo. This version is obviously more minimalist in comparison, but I still quite like it. Bonus is that the white is more like an off-white or cream, which elevates the entire kit.
1. Third (rumored): This is kind of cheating and I reserve the right to pull this back if the actual kit is vastly different from the leaks that have inundated the internet. And if we’re to take more leaks seriously, we won’t have to wait too long as the rumored release date is Tuesday, September 9th. That aside, the reason I love it is because I’m sucker for mint/teal/sea foam green kits and because it features the old school Adidas logo. It is a kit made entirely to hit all of pleasure centers
