After one of the most enjoyable second halfs in my history of being an Aggie football fan, Texas A&M enters the bye week at 8-0 after a 49-25 thrashing of the LSU Tigers in Death Valley. Here are some
of the numbers that tell the tale.
Salient Stats
- -2: Turnover margin for A&M tonight. Obviously those second quarter turnovers hurt, especially the one in the end zone, but the fact that A&M overcame those and still ended up dominating this game speaks volumes about this team.
- 2: Other SEC teams who have a winning record against LSU since 2018 (Tennessee is 1-0, Alabama is 5-2). After starting our SEC membership with six straight losses, winning five out of eight feels pretty darn good.
- 4: Straight road games with 40+ points for the Aggies (dating back to last season). According to ESPN’s Cole Cubelic, this is tied for the longest streak in SEC history.
- 6: Penalties for the Aggies. Obviously a couple of these were ill-timed, but after having 13 per game against Notre Dame and Auburn, I’ll take six penalties any day of the week.
- 7: Sacks for the A&M defense (a season high for LSU). Cashius Howell gets the headlines, but pressure was coming from all over for Garrett Nussmeier on Saturday night. Obviously this is a subpar offensive line made even worse by injuries, but taking advantage of the opponent’s weak points is what good teams do.
- 8-0: For the first time since 1992. Obviously at this point the win streak becomes somewhat irrelevant, because this team’s goals and expectations go beyond starting the season hot.
- 89: Second half yards for LSU. After giving up some big plays in the first half, the A&M defense absolutely dominated LSU in the second half, not allowing any points until the backups came in during garbage time.
- 108: Rushing yards for Marcel Reed. After gashing LSU on the ground a year ago, Marcel Reed did so perhaps even moreso in Baton Rouge, notching rushing touchdowns on A&M’s first drive of both halves.
- 118: Punt return yards in the third quarter for KC Concepcion. While A&M was gonna win this one either way, but that 79-yard return for a touchdown definitely put the Aggies in the driver’s seat for the duration.
- 13: Days until the Aggies play again. Another extremely well-times bye week as A&M gets a chance to soak in a massive win and rest up before continuing their quest for greatness.
