Lilly Hauser is making a name for herself this fall. The freshman didn’t play in Arizona softball’s first Red-Blue scrimmage or its doubleheader against UTEP, but she’s shown her prowess as both a pitcher and a hitter since debuting two weeks ago. She was a critical part of the Blue team’s 10-3 win on Friday evening.
Hauser’s first appearance came against juco competition, so it was difficult to determine how her skills might translate against Division I opponents. Her performance against her teammates
suggests that they should transfer quite well.
Hauser went 1 for 4 at the plate with a double to the wall against senior teammate Ryley Harrison.
The rookie righthander came in to pitch for the Blue team in the bottom of the fourth. It was the beginning of four innings of work.
Hauser gave up no runs on four hits while facing some of Arizona’s toughest, most experienced hitters. Sydney Stewart went 0-2 against her. Regan Shockey was 1-2 with a strikeout. Elizabeth Moffitt was 0-2 against the youngster.
Harrison started in the circle for the Red team. Jenae Berry was the first pitcher for Blue.
Harrison went four innings before giving way to Jalen Adams. Sarah Wright also threw for Red.
Harrison gave up three runs on seven hits, including two solo home runs by Grace Jenkins. The other run was an RBI single by Madison Conley, who hit a long one to the left field wall in the top of the third.
Adams also pitched for the Blue team, relieving Berry in the bottom of the third. Stewart had just recorded her only hit of the game with a double to the centerfield wall. Adams gave up a single and a walk, but a flyout, a caught stealing, and a fielder’s choice kept the Red team from doing any damage.
Adams made her first appearance for the Red team in the bottom of the fifth. She threw two innings in this outing. She gave up no runs on two hits and an error behind her. Things were more difficult when she re-entered the game for Red in the seventh to relieve Wright.
Adams came back into the game with two on and one out in the final inning. She got a fielder’s choice for the second out, but that left runners on the corners. She surrendered three straight RBI doubles before recording the third out. Her final line for both teams was three runs on six hits and a walk.
Wright entered the game for the Red team to start the seventh with the teams tied 3-3. She induced a 4-3 groundout from Sereniti Trice, but things went sideways after that. Three batters later, Kez Lucas had a three-run homer. Wright left the game with Red trailing.
Jenkins was the offensive leader with a 3-for-4 day that included two solo home runs. Lucas went 2 for 4 on the day. She had a single, a home run, and three RBI. Conley was 2 for 3 with a double and one RBI. She also reached on an error.
Each team had one big inning at the plate. Red started the game hot, sending seven to the plate and scoring three runs in the bottom of the first against Berry. Blue ended the game in dominant fashion with 11 going to the plate and seven runs crossing home in the top of the seventh against Wright and Adams.
Pitchers Kaylan Yoder and Rylie Holder did not appear during the scrimmage, but the other 19 Wildcats took the field.
The team returns to the field for the third Red-Blue scrimmage on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. MST. They will wrap up fall ball next week with a fourth Red-Blue scrimmage on Thursday, Nov. 12 at 6:30 p.m. and a game against UNLV at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 13. Entry to all fall games is free.
