Newcastle United’s main focus remains strengthening Matthias Jaissle’s attack before Tuesday’s transfer deadline, but the Magpies are continuing to explore opportunities elsewhere in the squad during the final days of the window.
According to The Athletic, Jaissle would like to add a pacy center-back, even though another defensive signing is currently considered less likely than that of a forward. A new report from Spain, however, suggests the Magpies might at least be keeping their options open.
According to El Faro de Vigo, Newcastle enquired about Celta Vigo defender Javi Rodríguez in recent weeks, with Everton and Fulham also approaching about the 23-year-old.
That said, Paris Saint-Germain is described as Rodríguez’s “most prominent” suitor, with the French giants having already made an initial approach. PSG advisor Luis Campos previously worked at Celta between 2022 and 2023 and is familiar with the Spain international, which could make for smoother negotiations between both parties.
For now, Newcastle has not submitted an offer, and there is no indication that negotiations have advanced beyond a simple enquiry.
Nevertheless, Rodríguez represents an intriguing profile for Jaissle. Although capable of operating at right-back, he is primarily a center-back, with only six of his 90 senior appearances coming on the right side of defense. The Celta academy graduate established himself as a key player under manager Claudio Giráldez last season, making 46 appearances before earning his senior Spain debut in June.
Rodríguez remains under contract through 2028 and reportedly has a €40 million (£34.6 million) release clause while his market value sits at a more manageable €18 million.
Would you spend up to €40 million on Rodríguez now, or should Newcastle devote every remaining resource to strengthening the attack? Share your thoughts in the comments section!
