When we looked at the Cleveland Browns depth charts, there is a lot of young talent to be found. Unfortunately, the team also lacks the type of veteran, top-level talent needed to be talked about among NFL playoff contenders. The cornerback room is an interesting one with two quality starters, Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell, followed by a lot of question marks.
Just days ago, our projected first six corners looked like this:
Starter – Denzel Ward Starter – Tyson Campbell CB3 – Myles Bryant CB4 – Myles Harden
CB5 – Dom Jones CB6 – Michael Coats Jr.
Cleveland also had the following listed on their 90-man roster at the cornerback position:
- Trey Avery
- Nate Evans
- Tyron Herring
- D’Angelo Ross
Tuesday afternoon, just days before training camp opens, with rookies reporting on Thursday, the Browns waived Dom Jones with a failed physical designation and replaced him with CB Damarri Mathis.
Mathis was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft. The 5’11” Mathis spent his first three seasons with the Broncos, starting 18 of the 43 games he played in as well as contributing 300 snaps on special teams.
After being waived by Denver during final cuts in 2025, Mathis signed with the Carolina Panthers but tore his ACL in practice and missed all of last season.
The 6’2” Jones was an undrafted free agent last year. He played in eight games for the Browns, with 57 snaps on special teams and 49 on defense. The reason for the failed physical has not been announced at the time of this article.
