
After dropping the first game of the series last night 3-2, the Athletics faced off today against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington.
In the top of the second, Tyler Soderstrom walked. Jacob Wilson singled to left, moving Soderstrom to third. Darrel Hernaiz dropped a bunt that the pitcher fielded and tossed home to get Soderstrom at the plate. Carlos Cortes singled off the second baseman’s glove to load the bases with two out. That brought up the number nine hitter Luis Urías
who lined out to first baseman Josh Naylor for the final out.
Springs cruised through the first three innings allowing just one hit. In the top of the fourth, the A’s got on the board. Jacob Wilson doubled, and Darrel Hernaiz singled to drive him home, giving the A’s a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Randy Arozarena homered on a 3-2 count to tie the ball game at 1-1. After striking out Cal Raleigh for the first out of the inning, A’s skipper Mark Kotsay ended Springs night by bringing in Michael Kelly. Springs final line was 5.1 innings, one earned run on two hits and two walks on just seventy-four pitches. Kelly struck out both batters he faced.
Kelly stayed in the game for the bottom of the seventh. He got the first two outs before giving up a base hit off Jacob Wilson’s glove to Victor Robles. Sean Newcomb replaced Kelly and struck out Crawford to end the inning.
Tyler Ferguson replaced Sean Newcomb in the bottom of the ninth with the score still tied. Ferguson sent the Mariners down 1-2-3 to send the game into extra innings.
Colby Thomas was the placed runner on second to start the tenth inning. Pinch hitter Brett Harris dropped a sacrifice bunt to move Thomas to third. Kurtz was unable to move the runner with a ground out to second base. But Shea Langeliers doubled with two outs to score Thomas and give the A’s a lead. Brent Rooker was intentionally walked to face Tyler Soderstrom. He grounded out to end the inning.
Ferguson remained in the game to pitch the tenth. Naylor was the placed runner, and pinch hitter Jorge Polanco walked. Victor Robles popped up a bunt to Langeliers for the first out. Kotsay pulled Ferguson for Hogan Harris. Crawford grounded into a force at second for the second out. But Naylor moved to third on the play. Cole Young walked to load the bases. Randy Arozarena grounded into a force out, third baseman Brett Harris to second baseman Darell Hernaiz to end the game. It took ten innings, but the A’s defeated the Mariners 2-1.
