After taking care of business against a couple of last-place teams last week, the Yankees start off their September slate with a tougher task, a trip to Houston. This three-game series with the Astros kicks off a two-week stretch that could decide where they end up in the American League playoff picture, with series with Toronto and Detroit to follow, before a trip to Boston. New York’s dominance against the dregs surely didn’t convince everyone that they’re back to being contenders. Continuing that dominance through
this gauntlet would do the trick.
Ahead of the three-game set with the Astros, get prepped with Peter’s series preview. Also, as we open a new month, we’ll have more reviews of the month of August, with Josh looking at the NL East, Jeremy checking in with the NL Central, and Matt working through the NL West. Sam will provide the Rivalry Roundup, Jeff writes the next entry in the 2000 Yankees diary, and Nolan analyzes the latest week that was down on the farm.

Questions/Prompts:
1. What’s your confidence level heading into this week’s series against the Astros and Blue Jays?
2. The top six teams in each league look pretty set with a month to go. Will a surprise team sneak into the playoffs, or are the teams that are entrenched in spots right now the ones we’ll see in October?
