Die Folgen: Bayern’s 3-2 victory over Eintracht (Bavarian Football Works)
Bayern Munich used a convincing first half effort to power its way past Eintracht Frankfurt for a 3-2 Bundesliga victory.
Harry Kane (who else?) led the attack with two goals and the squad dominated the matchup for long stretches before some poor decision-making late in the match allowed Eintracht Frankfurt to claw it way into the game and make things at least a little tense.
Let’s get into it, here are some quick hitters on the match:
- As always, let’s begin with a look at the starting XI:
- The lineup was as expected except for two things — the benching of Konrad Laimer and the inclusion of Joshua Kimmich. Laimer was thought to be healthy, but shortly before the game, Tz reported that Laimer was having calf issues. Bayern Munich released a post stating that Laimer was out due to load management. Josip Stanišić started at right-back in place of Laimer. Meanwhile, Kimmich, who was sitting on four yellow cards, was expected to sit out. We can assume that once the decision was made to sit Laimer, Vincent Kompany altered his plans and felt like he needed to play Kimmich.
- The selection of Kimmich is a pretty ominous sign for Tom Bischof, who continues to be passed over in the central midfield.
- Both squads came out with high energy to start and the pace of play was frantic. Physically, the teams were going at each other hard as well.
- After a consistent string of pressure and corners, Kimmich started a short corner play to Michael Olise and after an exchange that Olise eventually sent in as a looping, diagonal cross. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nnamdi Collins did not clear it effectively with his header, which eventually got to Aleksandar Pavlović, who firmly struck his chance into the lower, right corner for a goal. Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kauã Santos should have done a lot better with that chance.
- Just four minutes later, a corner from Olise found the head of a streaking Stanišić, who flicked it back to Kane for a textbook header. By the 20th minute, it was already 2-0.
- For a goalkeeper so heralded, Santos was very shaky.
- Stanišić had a great look in the 26th minute, but could not convert.
- Jamal Musiala had some trouble getting into the flow of the game early on. With Luis Díaz and Olise playing such prominent role — and the attack working from the outside-in a lot — Musiala is going to have to feel out how to best acclimate himself into the offense. He just missed getting on the end of a cross from Stanišić in the 42nd minute.
- Bayern Munich just absolutely throttled Eintracht Frankfurt in the first half and was utterly dominant. The visitors had nothing to offer against the Bavarians.
- Bayern Munich’s defense was rarely tested in the first half, but when it was, the backline just cleaned up everything neatly. Similarly, Jonas Urbig looked confident and in charge at goalkeeper.
- Eintracht came out more confident in the second half, but Bayern Munich quickly took back control of the match.
- After a quick Eintracht Frankfurt turnover, Olise had a golden opportunity to make it 3-0, but put his curling shot wide of the post.
- In the 62nd minute Jonathan Burkardt hit the post on an attempt that should have been goal as his chip attempt barely evaded a diving Urbig before rolling toward — and eventually clanging off — the post.
- In the 68th minute, Kane would strike…AGAIN and make it 3-0. The Englishman is on fire at the moment. Kimmich directed a pass to Kane, who rifled a left-footed shot to the far post, where Santos had no chance at making a stop.
- In the 76th minute, Kane was whistled for a penalty when he had a reckless challenge on Oscar Højlund (Kane was defending deep). Burkardt smashed his attempt low to the left side at a pace where Urbig could not get to it.
- In the 86th minute, Kimmich played an absolutely horrendous ball across the face of the from deep on the right side. The pass was awful, but Kim Min-jae also failed to make any effort to get the ball, which left Arnaud Kalimuendo to pick up the scraps and make it 3-2. What a sloppy, terrible play for Bayern Munich.
- The mistake from Kimmich (and Kim, too) was unacceptable.
- Serge Gnabry had a chance to make it 4-2 just moments later, but inexplicably whiffed on an aerial ball right in front of the net.
- In the fifth minute of added time, Olise drew a foul outside the box and Tom Bischof skied it over the crossbar. The youngster is not going to get many more chances if he cannot make those attempts more impactful.
- By the end of the match, Bayern Munich had just 51% possession, which is…not the norm.
- Overall, Bayern Munich was just dominant until the sloppiness late in the match. Still, the team powered through those down moments. What can you say? Kane is incredible, the attack was a complete menace to deal with for Eintracht Frankfurt, and the backline did its job as well. Yes, the penalty ruined the hopes for a clean sheet and Kimmich’s howler likely irritated many fans, but the Bavarians walked away with another three points.
