The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to be centered around trade rumors and discussions.
After signing rising star edge rusher Nick Herbig to a four-year, $100 million contract extension, many have wondered if Pittsburgh will trade one of T.J. Watt or Alex Highsmith to give Herbig a larger role.
Considering Watt’s dead Capp hit for 2026 would be $94 million, per Spotrac, as well as the Steelers’ want for the former Defensive Player of the Year to be a one-helmet player, Highsmith would be the more likely
trade candidate.
One team that could be a potential landing spot for No. 56 is the San Francisco 49ers, who need a proven edge rusher opposite Nick Bosa, and potentially a future No. 1 edge rusher if Bosa can’t stay healthy.
Grant Cohn covers the 49ers for Sports Illustrated, and took to his YouTube channel to discuss the potential of the 49ers acquiring Highsmith.
“What I’m hearing, [the Steelers] want a second-rounder for him,” Cohn said. “And can you hear me out? F—k them picks. The Niners don’t know what to do with them… trade [the pick] for Highsmith if that’s what it takes.”
If the Steelers were to be offered a second-round pick for Highsmith, it would be an offer they couldn’t say no to – especially when it feels all but certain that the Steelers will move on from the former fourth-round pick at one point or another anyway.
