The next opponent of the Seattle Seahawks just made a big change to their defense.
The Jacksonville Jaguars (tied for first in the AFC South) have traded CB Tyson Campbell and a 7th-round draft pick to
the Cleveland Browns (tied for last in the AFC North) for CB Greg Newsome II and a 6th-round draft pick.
These two AFC clubs are trading 2021 draft-mates at the cornerback position. Campbell was drafted by the Jags at the top of the 2nd Round, seven picks after the Brownies selected Newsome in the 1st.
Greg Newsome is on the final year of his rookie contract and Cleveland seems to be looking toward the future. While Newsome has looked better this year, you could argue that Campbell has been the more consistent and productive player over the last five seasons (12 more starts, 118 more tackles, and 3 more interceptions). The Browns gave up draft capital for a guy who’s also considered an asset against the run.
Tyson Campbell signed a significant contract extension in Jacksonville last offseason and has not lived up to it. He’s earned a 56.6 PFF grade this year but has struggled in coverage at times. Newsome has ranked higher in 2025, recording a 63.9 PFF grade, and allowing zero TD’s (compared to Campbell’s three). Though Newsome has started 12 fewer games, he has only five fewer pass breakups and seems to be a better fit for J-Ville’s coverage schemes.
Jaguars General Manager James Gladstone said that Newsome’s “skillset is a strong fit for our defensive scheme, which puts more vision on the quarterback and will lean on Greg’s ability to find the football.”
The Jaguars are rumbling along the tracks of a 3-game win streak, having just defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in wild fashion. The North Florida team will host the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday looking to continue their surprise run under rookie head coach, Liam Coen.
The Seahawks are coming off of a barn-burning loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and will be looking to ‘make it right’ in Jacksonville. The 12’s will hope that Greg Newsome II can’t find the football anywhere he looks in Week 6, as he acclimates to a new environment opposite of the moonlight appearances by Jags two-way player, Travis Hunter.
