Good morning, everyone! Tonight the LSU football team will take to Tiger Stadium for its 101st season, but this year the field will look a little different than the past century.
The football program is so excited to open up the home slate, they put out a hype video about it. But this hype video is just a tad bit different, let’s see if you pick up on the subtle messaging buried away inside.
That’s right, LSU ever so
casually snuck in a field partnership with Venture Global a liquid natural gas company that has three plants right here in Louisiana. If you didn’t pick up on it, Venture Global will be displayed on the 25 yard lines, opposite of the already existing SEC logos.
“Venture Global is honored to further strengthen our relationship with LSU Athletics and the entire LSU community,” Venture Global CEO Mike Sabel said in a statement. “We are proud to make history alongside LSU by supporting this iconic program and Tiger Stadium, which holds a special place in the hearts of so many Louisianans. As we continue to invest in Louisiana’s energy future, we are equally committed to supporting the state’s traditions and strong sense of community. Geaux Tigers!”
The NCAA allowed on-field logos in June of 2024 and schools have already jumped on the trend. Ohio State was one of the first I can remember getting in on the action, and now LSU has followed suit. The statement by Venture and LSU made no mention of how much the university is receiving for the sponsorship, but On3 estimates that schools could get anywhere from $8 to $10 million.
I don’t really have too many harsh feelings about this. This is just the cost of doing business nowadays, and in a weird way I’m glad LSU is doing this. You want more of these $18 million dollar rosters like the one Brian Kelly has? This is what it takes. I’m still going to watch, and you probably will too. What’s that Kent Brockman line? “I for one welcome our new insect overlords!“ Welcome to the new world of college football.
