It almost feels like many are waiting for the Pittsburgh Steelers to make a trade. They’ve made 11 such moves for players dating back to the 2024 offseason, the most recent of which sent wide receiver Michael Pittman to Pittsburgh.
The heaviest focus for a potential trade has lied with edge rusher Alex Highsmith. However, it’s another position that may be flying under the radar in terms of a potential deal.
In an appearance on 93.7 The Fan, Nick Farabaugh of PennLive says that the Steelers and Detroit
Lions could come together for a trade featuring either Asante Samuel Jr. or Brandin Echols.
This comes after a slew of issues that have come to be with Detroit’s secondary, For starters, safety Kerby Joseph’s future is up in the air due to a chronic knee injury. Detroit then released cornerback Terrion Arnold following his arrest on kidnapping charges. As it currently stands, the Lions’ starters at cornerback are D.J. Reed and Rock Ya-Sin, with Roger McCreary and Ennis Rakestraw other names to watch predominantly at nickel.
Samuel joined the Steelers in the middle of the 2025 season following a spinal fusion procedure, intercepting one pass in six games played. Echols was a reliable presence when called upon, picking off two passes and allowing a target EPA of -20.3.
Considering Pittsburgh’s supreme depth at cornerback, it’s reasonable to expect more murmurs of potential trades to pop up, especially if rookie Daylen Everette shows early promise in training camp and preseason play. The Steelers will arrive for training camp on July 28 and hold their first practice July 29.
