As the Syracuse Orange get set to travel to South Bend for Saturday’s matchup against No. 9 Notre Dame, head coach Fran Brown confirmed this week that freshman walk-on Joe Filardi will start at quarterback.
However, Brown also noted that freshman Luke Carney remains in the mix and could see playing time this week or next as the staff continues to manage his redshirt status.
Filardi Gets the Nod
Brown’s decision signals confidence in Filardi heading into one of the toughest road environments in college football. When I spoke to Filardi, he remained calm despite the unusual position—starting on the road as a true freshman walk-on against a top-10 opponent.
“I just thanked them for the opportunity and told them I’ll give them everything I got.”
Filardi also emphasized that he trusts the staff’s decisions and is focused on preparation.
“I trust Coach Fran’s decision, and I know he’s going to make the right decision for the team.”
In media availability, Filardi didn’t seem phased at all. It looked like a normal Tuesday for him, even though this will be his biggest stage yet. He’s seen small spurts of action this season, but nothing close to what he’ll face this weekend.
One thing Filardi highlighted was his connection with tight end Dan Villari, which has been built over years, not weeks. That Long Island bond could become one of Syracuse’s most reliable lifelines against Notre Dame’s defense.
“Dan is from Long Island with me, so I’ve definitely got a lot of reps with Dan in the offseason and stuff.” — Filardi
Carney’s Role: Ready, Waiting, and Potentially Impactful
Freshman quarterback Luke Carney is also preparing as if he’ll play. Brown said he could see the field this week or next, giving Syracuse some important flexibility. Carney, like Filardi, carried himself with a calm, composed presence in the media, nothing about the moment seemed too big for him.
“Go every day, compete in practice — it will be an open competition to see who starts.” — Carney
Carney confirmed that the original plan was to redshirt, but the quarterback situation this season has created uncertainty.
“That was the initial plan to redshirt. Obviously with the situation, everything has been uncertain.” — Carney
With Steve Angeli announcing he’ll return next season and the transfer portal looming everywhere in college football, Carney was also asked about his long-term plans. His answer was direct:
“Yes, I see myself here.” — Carney
The Bottom Line
Syracuse heads into South Bend with a freshman walk-on starter and another freshman, once slated to redshirt, ready to contribute if needed. Filardi gets the ball first, but Carney’s presence gives the Orange a second option if the game calls for it.
However it plays out, Syracuse’s trip to Notre Dame will be shaped heavily by the play—and poise—of its youngest quarterbacks.
