Ranked No. 1 in both preseason polls before Saturday’s loss to the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes, the Texas Longhorns look to bounce back with three straight non-conference road games, starting with a matchup against the San Jose State Spartans on Saturday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, kicking off at 11 a.m. Central on ABC.
According to FanDuel on Monday, Texas is a 35.5-point favorite over San Jose State, which lost its season opener to Central Michigan, 16-14, at home at CEFCU Stadium on Saturday.
The Spartans fell behind 13-0 to the Chippewas before scoring 14 straight points between the second and third quarters to take the lead on the first drive of the second half before the game devolved into a low-scoring affair after halftime, in part because Central Michigan went on a grinding 14-play, 70-yard drive that took 7:16 off the clock in the fourth quarter and produced the go-ahead field goal from 28 yards with 4:13 remaining.
San Jose State had two opportunities to retake the lead, but kicker Dennis Lynch missed from 33 yards with 1:13 on the clock and from 56 yards as time expired.
In the only previous matchup between the two schools in the all-time series, Texas beat San Jose State 56-0 in 2017, the second game of the Tom Herman era.
