Wanderlei Silva wants to have his day in court with Rafael Freitas, the man that knocked him unconscious during a post-fight brawl this past Saturday in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Rafael is the son of Brazilian boxing legend Acelino Freitas, who defeated Silva.
“The Axe Murderer” revealed the news Wednesday on social media, saying he’s still suffering from the aftermath of the attack.
“I had several work to do but I can’t because of my face,” Silva said. “I can’t sleep, I’m in a lot of pain, in such discomfort.
That can’t stay like that. That was undoubtedly a criminal act, and every criminal act has to be judged by the justice. And I’m going after justice.”
Silva was disqualified for multiple fouls in his boxing exhibition with “Popo” Freitas in the main event of Spaten Fight Night 2, and revealed the extent of his injuries.
“I broke my two orbital [bones], I have my nose broken in four places,” Silva said. “I was assaulted in criminal fashion by ‘Popo’s’ son, who invaded the ring. He invaded the ring hitting me with two punches to the back of the head. Then, he landed the punch that opened a seven-stitch cut around my eye.”
“I’m very upset, I’m really hurt,” he continued. “Hurt in the inside, hurt in the outside. Watching that scene, me laying no the ground and people — who weren’t even security because the event had no security — dragging me, right? What a horrible scene, you know?”
Silva and Freitas received 180-day suspensions by the Brazilian National Boxing Council (CNB) but Rafael Freitas was not sanctioned by the entity because he wasn’t a licensed cornerman. CNB said, however, that they will recommend his ban for indefinite time from boxing events.
Rafael Freitas’ only comment since the incident was made Sunday night to Globo, the broadcast partner in Brazil, in which he claims legitimate defense.
“When I realized a brawl had started, initiated by Wanderlei’s team, his son, his coach Andre Dida and Werdum,” Rafael Freitas said. “When I saw all of them assaulting my father and my brothers, I got in legitimate defense. In the heat of the moment, I only thought about defending my family.”
