When Dallas traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers last winter, fans were outraged. When Anthony Davis, who came over from LA in the trade, was injured, that was bad. Then former Duke star Kyrie
Irving blew out an ACL, which was also devastating.
However, Dallas got unbelievably lucky in the draft and ended up with the #1 pick, which they used on Duke’s Cooper Flagg.
So far, Flagg is ahead of schedule and has played at point guard in the pre-season and has been really good, with some people arguing that he’s already better than Luka was at this age and possibly better than Luka now.
He’s going to have to prove that, but he has definitely been impressive so far and when you slide him into the lineup instead of Doncic, things change. Dallas had to slow down to let Luka dominate. With Flagg though, Dallas is suddenly not just longer, but far faster and a potential defensive nightmare.
This video looks at the wildly different scenarios Dallas faces. If Dallas becomes a tall and overpowering team built around defense, it’s possible that G.M. Nico Harrison, who took immense heat for the aforementioned trade, could end up looking like a genius.
It’s equally possible that this could blow up and he could end up looking like an unemployed idiot.
Watching Dallas develop this season is going to be absolutely fascinating.
