Michael Olise is not exactly the easiest player to figure out — and honestly, that is part of what makes him so much fun.
After Bayern Munich’s emphatic 5-0 Champions League victory over FK Bodø/Glimt, Olise was asked about the performance and offered a response that was quintessentially Olise (as captured by @iMiaSanMia): “It was a good first game. We wanted to win at home, I’m happy.”
That is it.
No grand declaration.
No sweeping statement about Bayern’s European ambitions.
No attempt to make himself
the center of attention after another impressive performance. Just: “We wanted to win. We won. I’m happy.”
There is something wonderfully odd about Olise’s personality. The Frenchman can come across as aloof, quiet and completely detached from the circus that surrounds professional football. Then, occasionally, the goofy side comes out and provides a reminder that there is considerably more going on behind that seemingly expressionless exterior.
And then he steps onto the pitch. That is where the whole thing becomes awesome.
Olise has quickly developed into one of Bayern’s most entertaining players because his personality away from the field contrasts so sharply with what he does on it. He can be understated in interviews and almost mischievous in his demeanor, but once the ball is at his feet, he plays with confidence and imagination.
The 5-0 win over Bodø/Glimt was another reminder of that. Bayern wanted a strong start to their Champions League campaign, and Olise was once again part of an attack capable of overwhelming an opponent.
Maybe the best thing about Olise is that he doesn’t seem particularly interested in explaining himself or even really saying anything at all — at least to the public. Internally, teammates rave over his attitude and sense of humor.
Olise just plays. When a player can be odd, aloof, goofy, and absolutely brilliant, there is really no reason to ask for anything else.
