Competing in arguably the toughest folkstyle tournament in high school — Super 32 — Husker commit Mac Crosson won this year’s championship at 157 pounds yesterday in Greensboro, N.C.
A senior at Indianola High School in Iowa, Crosson is the top-ranked 157-pounder in the country since winning his match at Who’s Number One a month ago — a 2-1 overtime win over Camryn Howard out of New York.
Crosson defended that top ranking against a tough national field this weekend. In six matches, Crosson scored 11
takedowns while not giving up a single one. Against top competition, Crosson relied on his elite defense to climb to the top of the podium.
The top-seeded Crosson won his first two matches with bonus points before downing a pair of Pennsylvania wrestlers — 17-seed Luke Knox and 9-seed Michael Ruane — via decision. In the semifinal, Crosson beat 5-seed Alden Arnett out of Illinois 6-1 in tiebreakers.
In the final, Crosson again faced 2-seed Camryn Howard. Much like their WNO match, this match was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and sudden victory, sending things to tiebreakers. In the first tiebreaker, Crosson started on top and put together a tough ride with multiple cut-back returns to the mat on the way to riding out the 30-second period. In the second tiebreaker, Crosson started on bottom and secured his escape point with 10 seconds left — he withstood the final onslaught to secure the 2-1 win.
For awhile, Crosson was Nebraska’s lone commit in the 2027 class, but he got company earlier this month when Sam Howard (Boonville HS in Indiana) announced his commitment to the Huskers. The #2-ranked 220-pounder in the country according to FloWrestling, Howard won a Fargo National Championship in freestyle at 220 pounds this summer.
A future 197-pounder for Nebraska, Howard was slated to be the 1-seed at 220 pounds at this weekend’s Super 32 tournament, but he was sidelined with an injury while training in the lead up.
Both Crosson and Howard will join the Huskers for the 2027-28 season.
