It’s the most coveted record owned by a member of the Buffalo Bills — heck, all of Buffalo sports — Bruce Smith’s all-time sack record of 200. And the newest member of the Los Angeles Rams has his sights set on it.
During an recent YouTube interview with the Rams via Pro Football Talk, Myles Garrett said the following: “There’s a big goal out there, that’s 200.” Garrett went on to say:
“I want to eclipse that, or I want to make it close. I have a good relationship with the guy who has that record,
and being able to go get that one would mean a lot to myself, and to him as well.”
After his 23-sack season in 2025, Garrett sits tied with Dwight Freeney for 28th on the all-time list at 135.5. He will be 31 in late December.
WGR 550’s Joe DiBiase crunched the numbers on what it would take for Garrett to get to Smith’s record:
For clarity on Joe’s tweet — he is saying that if Garrett retires by Age 35, he’ll need to average 15 sacks per season. to break the record. If he retires at 36, he’ll have to average 12.5 sacks per season. And so on.
Given the 23-sack eruption — and single-season record — Garrett has averaged 17 sacks in the last three seasons. Pretty remarkable. Let’s say that average continues for the next two years.
That would put him only 30.5 sacks away from Smith’s record entering the 2029 campaign in which he will begin at 32 years old and turn 33 that December (of 2028).
From there — easy math here — he’d only need a little more than a 10-sack average in his next three campaigns to break Smith’s record.
Of course, Smith had the opportunity to play in 16 regular-season games each year of his career. Since 2021, Garrett has had 17 games on his schedule. And Smith played until he was 40.
Do you think Garrett can do it? And as the WGR guys — Jeremy White and DiBiase — posed Friday morning, is this a record you care about as a Buffalo sports fan?
