One day after somewhat surprisingly leaving him off their initial 53-man roster, the New York Giants are signing veteran wide receiver/return man Braxton Berrios to their practice squad.
With Calvin Austin having suffered a season-ending torn ACL, Berrios figures to be the primary punt returner and part of the primary kickoff return duo with Deonte Banks. Teams can elevate players from the practice squad three times before having to add them to their 53-man rosters, and the Giants figure to do that
with Berrios.
The Giants cut the 30-year-old Berrios on Sunday, enabling them to keep second-year tight end Thomas Fidone rather than exposing him to waivers in an effort to get him to the practice squad.
Entering his eighth season, Berrios has averaged 11.3 yards on 100 career punt returns, 24.9 yards on 91 kickoff returns, and has 140 career pass receptions.
