After three starts in the NFL, New Orleans Saints QB Tyler Shough has had an up-and-down start. Still, despite the results not going the Saints’ way, Shough has shown signs that make fans feel better about
the future, and there is a real chance New Orleans goes into next season with him at QB. It is still not a guarantee that it will happen, but as of now, he has shown enough to at least feel it could, and a former Saints safety likes what he saw in Shough’s first starts.
In an exclusive interview with DJ Siddiqi at RG, Louisiana legend Tyrann Mathieu discussed what Shough is showing at QB:
“You’re trying to spark the engines around you,” says Mathieu. “I think he’s able to do that along with just his ability to move in the pocket and keep his eyes downfield. I thought that was impressive for a guy that didn’t really play football this season.”
Shough being able to look downfield was a significant difference from what we saw when Spencer Rattler was at QB. Even during the loss against the Atlanta Falcons, Shough was always going through his progressions and looking downfield before he checked the ball down (when he had some time).
Also, when talking about Shough’s possibility of being the starter in 2026, this is what Mathieu had to say:
“They traded Shaheed, so now they have a few more picks. I still think they need a few more draft picks. They need to hit on these draft picks because when I think about the great teams and even when the saints were really, really good a couple years ago, it’s because they drafted really well. Those guys ended up paying dividends, paying returns to them. I think the more draft picks they get, the more they can continue to kind of rebuild that team around Tyler, Chris and guys like that.“
This is a sentiment that any share with how the season has gone, and with Shough not being a reason why the Saints are losing games, wasting a top draft pick on another QB in a weak class would be smart to avoid.
