The Royals signed left-handed pitcher Anthony Gose and assigned him to Triple-A Omaha this week. The 35-year-old has pitched in parts of three MLB seasons with Cleveland appearing in 31 games with a 4.78 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 32 innings. He has not appeared in the big leagues since 2024.
Gose was originally drafted in the second round of the 2008 draft by the Phillies as an outfielder. He debuted in 2012 with the Blue Jays and hit .240/.309/.348 in parts of five seasons. In 2017, he converted to
a pitcher and was able to bring a fastball that reached the high-90s. He racked up good strikeout numbers in the minors, but with shaky control. He was able to break into the big leagues with Cleveland in 2021, and in 2022 he received ane extended look, appearing in 22 games with a 4.71 ERA.
Gose spent all of last year in Triple-A, with the Mets and Diamondbacks organizations. He was pitching for Leones de Yucatán in the Mexican League, where he had yet to give up a run or walk in 7.2 innings with 15 strikeouts. He throws a four-seamer that registers in the mid-90s, and a slider.
Teams frequently need to fill up the pitching staff at Triple-A with veterans that, frankly, the team doesn’t care about in the long-term. With relievers shuttling back and forth between the big leagues and minors, they need someone to fill some innings at a moment’s notice. Last year’s Omaha roster featured several former MLB pitchers like Michael Fulmer, Dallas Keuchel, Joey Krehbiel, Trevor Richards, Spencer Turnbull, Stephen Nogosek, and 45-year-old Rich Hill. And who knows, maybe Gose still has something left in the tank?
