Bayern Munich suffered its first loss of the seasons to FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga last weekend at the Allianz Arena, but their 2025/26 campaign thus far has exceeded expectations. They have an eight-point
lead over Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga table, are through to the Champions League round of 16, and are in the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal next month — another historic treble is well and truly still in the cards for a side that had to play most of the beginning of the season without Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies.
It’s been some of the newer players at the club that have been shining the most, though, having quelled any and all disappoint at having missed out on getting Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen over the summer; a player that’s now finally starting to look like his old self at Liverpool. In Bayern’s attack, Luis Díaz and Michael Olise have formed a formidable partnership on the flanks either side of Harry Kane and. The pair of wingers have scored a total of 27 goals between the two of them and they have been involved in over 50 goal involvements; Díaz has 14 goals and 11 assists while Olise has 13 goals and 20 assists.
The world has taken notice of just how effective the attacking pair have been alongside Kane and former Bayern assistant manager Hermann “Tiger” Gerland recently spoke about his admiration of the two players in an interview with Abendzeitung. They’ve already drawn comparisons to the likes of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry with their frequency of contributions in attack, but their individually as unique as they are cohesive playing in the same firing line.
“Olise and Díaz are outstanding, outstanding players – everyone can see that. These transfers were first-class, an excellent achievement,” Gerland raved. While the Robbery comparisons may be flattering for the players and the club, Gerland knows that Olise and Lucho still don’t have Champions League titles and/or trebles under their belts. “Arjen and Franck were unpredictable and unstoppable on the pitch. Their opponents never knew what they were going to do next. Both caused chaos on the pitch in their own way. Arjen had his own special thing when he pulled the ball from the right into the middle in his inimitable way and finished with his left foot. And Ribéry could do everything. They’re of course still missing the big title,” he stressed.
