The Michigan Wolverines lost to Minnesota on Saturday, 20-14. Despite a strong showing from the defense, including a pick-six, the team still lost the turnover battle, was out-gained on offense and was shut out in the second half. The offense didn’t move the ball, and wide receiver Andrew Marsh had a significant blunder on special teams. The team will look to regroup during the bye week, which feels like it couldn’t come at a better time.
We asked for your thoughts on the loss in The Feed after the game.
Boy, you had some concise thoughts.
It’s not looking good
It’s tough to watch this team. Many of us will turn on the TV or show up to the game in a couple weeks and cheer on these players like our life depends on it because that’s what you do as a college football fan. It’s just that the performance, mostly on offense, was not impressive on Saturday. Quarterback Bryce Underwood was 10-of-21, with two interceptions, three sacks and no touchdowns. Running back Jordan Marshall got into the end zone when Michigan had a short field, but only had 10 carries for 50 yards. As a whole, the team managed just 79 rushing yards.
miamiwolverine: Bryce, Offense, Pathetic!
Bloosier: Offense is offensive
SSportsfan23: Can’t run block
GPgoblue: Painful to watch
DoubleBlue: Season from hell.
TexasTigers: Dang, we stink
In reality, there’s not a whole heck of a lot more you can ask of the defense. Linebacker Nathaniel Staehling got the pick-six, and cornerback Smith Snowden gave the offense a short field after an interception. Minnesota managed 126 rushing yards and 136 passing yards, and the Gophers got 10 points off Michigan’s three turnovers. That’s despite the defense being on the field nearly the entire game. They also gave the ball back to the offense multiple times in the final quarter, something I didn’t think would happen. Props to that unit.
Adamsrocks: Defense still rocks
Hey, coaches! What are you doing?!
The first few games, it’s a little easier to give the coaching staff some leeway. They’re learning a new roster, a new place, new facilities, etc. Five games into the season, sitting at 3-2 (0-2 B1G), it’s a little harder to give the coaches, especially Jason Beck and Koy Detmer Jr., the same slack.
Despite having rough quarterback situations the past two seasons, Michigan still made explosive plays and had a solid run game. Now, it doesn’t look like there’s a well-formulated plan.
Along with that, the coaching staff had multiple timeouts on its final offensive possession, but didn’t use them all. Instead, Underwood threw a bad ball out of bounds on fourth down. Michigan then used a timeout on Minnesota’s next possession to stop the clock before it could just take a knee again. Is there a strategy there that I’m missing, or was that a mistake?
FlabberGaster: Can the coach.
Eric-ji: Coaches can’t coach
Hoeckytown Hero: Does Michigan practice?
Dead2Sin: Talent Wasting Away
Are we over football?
For some of us, we’ve got to channel our optimism and excitement into some other sport now. For Kellen Voss, it’s basketball. He and the Maize n Brew team will have some pretty good content in the months ahead, so keep an eye out for that!
Don’t get me wrong, I love basketball, but this is the year for hockey to shine. The Wolverines are favored to win the Big Ten this season after bringing back some of their best players like Michael Hage and Jayden Perron. They also brought back goalie Jack Ivankovic and added defenseman Landon DuPont. They just swept Bowling Green and have an exciting series coming up against Denver in a few weeks. The Wolverines could contend for a national championship this season; the team just needs to get over the Frozen Four hump for the first time in years.
BostonBlue: Hockey and basketball
