The New Orleans Saints are now 1-2 after falling to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday night at the Caesars Superdome in a game that featured what was another very controversial call by the officials.
The call came in the fourth quarter when Raiders defensive end Malcolm Koonce hit Tyler Shough as he attempted to throw. The officials ruled that Shough lost control of the ball before his hand began moving forward, making it a fumble rather than an incomplete pass. The ruling was upheld after review, giving
Las Vegas possession and adding another frustrating chapter in the book of discrepancies from NFL officiating.
Unfortunately, that fumble became the turning point of the game as the Saints were leading 27-22 and we’re at Raiders’ 30-yard line with a chance to extend their lead when Shough lost the ball. Instead, the Raiders were given possession and scored shortly after to take a 28-27 lead.
The turnover resulted in a complete shift in momentum for the Saints, becoming the first of four straight possessions to end in turnovers as the Raiders scored the final 19 points of the game.
The Saints will look to bounce back this week in what will be an emotional matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. The game will recognize the 20th anniversary of the historic “Domecoming” game, when New Orleans returned to the Superdome for the first time following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
With one of the NFL’s biggest rivalries taking center stage, there is certainly no love lost between these two teams. Under the bright lights of Monday Night Football, with a national audience watching, both teams will have plenty to prove as they write the next chapter in their heated NFC South feud.
According to FanDuel, the Saints are currently 2.5-point favorites against the Falcons, with an over/under of 48.5 points. However, those odds could move as kickoff approaches.
