The Jets made some news this week bringing in veteran quarterback Russell Wilson for a visit.
Wilson at one time was one of the top quarterbacks in the league. Those days are long in the past. Wilson’s mobility, which was so essential to his game, has eroded with age. With it, the quality of his play has dropped tremendously. If Wilson chooses to continue his playing career, he will be signing with his fourth team in four years.
At this point it is very much an open question whether Wilson will continue to play. Just a few days after his visit, reports have emerged that the 37 year old might be looking ahead to his next chapter.
The matter might be out of the Jets’ hands, but would you like to see Wilson sign to back up Geno Smith. Smith and Wilson were teammates for three years with the Seattle Seahawks. The depth chart was flipped there. Russell backed up Geno?
I have a tough time getting passionate either way. Wilson has been in a steep decline over the last half decade. I am skeptical he can help any team even as a backup. The Jets’ current quarterback depth behind Smith is underwhelming. Bailey Zappe and rookie Cade Klubnik are the two options behind Geno. Even so it isn’t entirely clear that Wilson would be an upgrade.
Still, the end result of signing Wilson would likely be Zappe’s release. If you’re asking me to be passionate as to whether Bailey Zappe stays or goes, you’ve taken on a tough task.
What do you think? Would you like to see the Jets bring in the former Seahawks star in a backup role?
