I don’t have a problem with remakes that bear the title of their predecessors.
Some of my favorite flicks include The Thing, Casino Royale, and The Fly, among others. But it sounds like the upcoming Bloodsport do-over is just another victim of “Tinseltown’s” tired trend of reimagined reboots that have nothing to do with the original work.
Producers just want whatever value is left in the name.
That leaves writer/director Michaela Coel with the tall task of making a movie that will attract new fans without
pissing off the old. Coel, who was in diapers when the Jean-Claude Van Damme classic was released back in 1988, certainly sounds up for the challenge.
“I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity and isolation the sport demands of them. I am excited to explore this world, especially so with A24 as my collaborators. LET’S FUCKING GO,” Coel said in a statement (via Hollywood Reporter).
Hollywood has been trying to relaunch Bloodsport since 2011.
“In 1988, the now-iconic Bloodsport introduced audiences to the gritty aesthetic of mixed martial arts, and I look forward to bringing back that high-energy tournament format to the big screen again,” said producer Marc Toberoff.
Can’t be any worse than 2016’s flaccid Kickboxer reboot … right?
